Narrative Design Task for a Fantasy RPG Title Application
During my application for a narrative role at a triple A RPG games studio, I was asked to work on three different tasks to demonstrate the skills required for the role.
For the Narrative design task, I was given three different assignments to do with the character from the game. For the first assignment, I was given half of a narrative brief for the character and asked to finish the narrative arc. The second assignment was to bringĀ the character's personality to life, while the third assignment was to design a few in-game scenes/encounters which demonstrated the characterisation of task one and two.
When approaching this task, my primary aim was to design a character arc that the player would enjoy unfolding. I focused on ensuring player agency was central to the character's arc, and that the decisions the player makes had an impact on the story direction. I was also mindful of the lore of the IP and wanted to incorporate this in a meaningful way for players. I researched the world of the IP and gave the character a background that was fitting to his personality traits.
